There's been a lot of threads in the last week each PSAing one particular mechanic new players might not know about. I figured it would be a good time to collect some of the top tips together as a mini-guide for things new players may not be aware of, or returning players may not remember.
- Holding the dodge button for a moment after dodging causes you to start dashing immediately (/u/CharlieLove)
- While Focus Spirit is active, pressing your special button will drain your remaining magic and activate an attack that reveals the WPG of all nearby enemies, including giant bosses. Letting your magic run out releases a more powerful AoE attack with no additional effects. (/u/SchroedingersSphere)
- Additional benefits of Focus Spirit: Asides from the obvious increased attack speed, you also suffer no hitstun (that is, you don't get knocked back at all), and while you still take damage, you cannot die, instead you remain on 1/4 heart until Focus Spirit ends. As a result, if your health is getting low, consider using Focus Spirit to endure a little longer - or conversely, if you are already in Focus Spirit and very low on health, you can pretty safely just ignore getting hit any more, since it won't kill you. On top of this, barrier keeps do not harm you while Focus Spirit is active, making Focus Spirit a great tool for attacking these keeps if you do not have a barrier fairy for them handy. (/u/Swithe)
- Your center camera button also serves as your guard button. Guard is easy to overlook, but a powerful tool - it avoids all damage from enemies ahead, except a rare few who break guards, and while guarding, if you dodge sideways or backwards rapidly you have literally zero frames in between where you can take damage (normal guards leave you vulnerable for a very brief period)
- It is possible to dodge during a lot of attack animations - doing so is called 'dodge cancelling' in the community. This is hugely useful for many slower characters, who can dodge out of the end of some attack animations, helping them both attack again more quickly, or reach running speed again with less downtime. It can also be useful for dodging out of attacks you didn't want to use in some cases - though not many attacks can be dodge cancelled early on. Many other animations, such as using items, can also be dodge cancelled. (/u/Swithe)
- Specials can be used any time you have at least one full gauge, and aren't in the air. They prevent all damage while active, and freeze enemies in a small area around you. Because of these effects, they can be used to 'Special Cancel' attacks - that is, using a special in the middle of another attack - which is a good way to avoid taking hits when you mis-time another attack (or just want to deal more damage to a target). (/u/Swithe)

Reuse the Same Compass Item Card in Adventure Mode
Normally all item cards in the Adventure Mode maps are single use, but this trick will allow you to use the same Compass card multiple times without the need to earn / buy another.
When using the Compass on a square that allows it, an area will sparkle as a hint, along with a message prompt starting you found a suspicious area. When the message prompt appears, DO NOT press A to continue (otherwise the game will autosave and you will lose that item card forever). Instead, hit the HOME button and quit the game. When you restart the game and head into Adventure Mode, you'll see that you'll still have the same amount of Compass cards in your posession. You can use this trick to get multiple hints with the same card, making finding the hidden spots to use items much simpler.

Apothecary Mixtures
The Apothecary, found in the Bazaar, contains many mixtures you can create using found materials and a rupee cost. These mixtures last for a single level and provide a variety of effects, generally to help with collecting drops or getting more XP and rupees. Obtaining these mixtures requires the Apothecary to be leveled up, which is done by collecting Gold Skulltula illustrations from throughout Legend and/or Adventure Mode. You'll need a total of 90 Skulltulas to fully open up the Apothecary:
Apothecary Level 1 - 0 Skulltulas (default)
Apothecary Level 2 - 3 Skulltulas
Apothecary Level 3 - 12 Skulltulas
Apothecary Level 4 - 45 Skulltulas
Apothecary Level 5 - 90 Skulltulas
(NOTE: You can use the Medal List in the Gallery to check your Skulltula progress. Look for the medal for collecting 100 Skulltulas to see a meter of how many you've collected so far.)
In addition, leveling up your Apothecary will also increase the potency of your special potion that characters can drink mid-battle to get a boost of healing as well as some SP gauge. The potion will also change color (Red -> Purple -> Blue -> Green -> Yellow) to reflect its potency.
Lastly, a collection of Food Drop potions will unlock at Apothecary Lv3 (and one at Lv4), but they also require you to have obtained at least one companion fairy before they show up there.

Raising Maximum Fairies in My Fairy Mode
When you first unlock the use of fairies in game, you are only allowed to keep 5 fairies at one time. However, there is a way to raise the maximum amount.
Each map in Adventure Mode has a 'final' stage with Ganon as the final enemy. (Killing him will trigger the credits) Each final stage completed will raise your maximum fairy count by one. There are nine full maps, so it is possible to hold up to 14 fairies if all final stages are cleared.

Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition is out today for Nintendo Switch, serving as the first utterly complete version of the game. It includes all the hack and slash action we've come to expect from Hyrule Warriors, all the DLC such as Cia's Tale, Linkle's Tale, and the Saga of the Great Sea, and new costumes for both Link and Zelda based on The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. It's possible that there may be more DLC coming down the line, but for now, that's what's on the table.
Don't worry if you've never touched Hyrule Warriors before. It's easy to get into this game; here's everything you need to know to play.
Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition All Levels
How to play
Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition is similar to the Dynasty Warriors series, a hack-and-slash where characters battle huge waves of enemies with powerful attacks. The focus of the game is on combat, though there is some exploration involved as characters discover items and enemies on the battlefield. As you fight, you will mow down smaller enemies and make your way toward larger bosses with stronger abilities.
Items from elsewhere in the series make an appearance, such as the bow and bombs. In addition, each character has their own set of special abilities based on their powers in the games they are in. Characters have multiple basic attacks as well as a Special Attack, which can be used after filling up a gauge by defeating enemies and collecting Force Fragments. Another ability, Force Spirit, is accomplished similarly by filling up the character's Magic Bar. Force Spirit boosts the character's power and gives them an alternate Special Attack.
Characters can augment their powers be equipping different weapons, which they can get through the story, Adventure Mode, or amiibo. Weapons will have different rarities and different strengths and abilities, and you can spend rupees in the game's hub menu to upgrade them further.
If all that sounds complex and crazy, don't worry. Hyrule Warriors starts you out slowly with just Link and simple abilities with easy enemies to bring them down. It's worth paying attention to the tutorials early on and trying out the different moves you can do with different characters. Sure, it's a hack-and-slash, and there's nothing more satisfying than just mashing buttons to get through. But if you take the time to learn about each character as the game presents them, you'll have even more fun pulling off their best and most mayhem-inducing moves.
Is there a story?
Hyrule Warriors contains a story mode called Legend Mode, which is divided into eighteen chapters set across Hyrule. In them, Hyrule Castle is under attack by an evil sorceress, and our heroes must get to the bottom of the situation. As you play through Legend Mode, you will experience the story and the unusual circumstances that brought the different characters together to fight. Progressing will unlock more characters to play as. Though scenarios at first must be played with certain characters, returning later in Free Mode will let you beat them with any unlocked character.
There's also an Adventure Mode, which takes place on a grid shaped like the world from the original Legend of Zelda. Defeating enemies on each square of the grid and completing objectives gives you a rank for that square, allowing you to progress to the next one. Doing well in this mode will unlock weapons and other goodies. Another mode, Challenge Mode, offers specific, themed battles to complete.
Finally, Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition has a local co-op that allows you to play through the game with two people. With the game on the Nintendo Switch now, you can play local co-op from anywhere by using the Joy-Con controllers and the system in its handheld mode, or any controller combination you have!
Can I be any character in The Legend of Zelda?
Hyrule Warriors doesn't include every character from Hyrule, but it does feature the biggest playable compilation of characters from the Zelda universe you've ever seen. And because it's the Definitive Edition, all DLC characters from the Wii U and 3DS versions are here too! Some of these characters are new to the series in Hyrule Warriors, such as the lady Link character Linkle. Here's every playable character you can unlock:
- Link
- Impa
- Sheik
- Lana
- Zelda
- Ganondorf
- Darunia
- Ruto
- Agitha
- Midna
- Zant
- Fi
- Ghirahim

- Skull Kid
- Toon Link
- Tetra
- King Daphnes
- Medli
- Marin
- Toon Zelda
- Ravio
- Yuga
I have so many amiibo that would work with this!
Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition is compatible with most amiibo. Tap any Legend of Zelda-related amiibo for either an in-game spinner weapon or a 3-star or higher weapon to fight with. The latter can be done up to twice per day. Other, non-Legend of Zelda amiibo will net you lesser weapons, rupees, or crafting materials. You can check our guide on the subject for a full breakdown of what amiibo gives what item.
How many rupees is this?
Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition costs $59.99 and it's available now!

Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition Max Level 3
The Apothecary in the Bazaar contains many mixtures you can create using materials and rupees. These mixtures last for a single level and provide a variety of effects, normally to help with collecting drops or getting more XP and rupees. Obtaining these mixtures requires the Apothecary to be leveled up, which is done by collecting Gold Skulltula illustrations from throughout Legend and Adventure mode. You need a total of 90 Skulltulas to fully unlock the Apothecary. The following is the level the Apothecary is upgraded using the indicated number of Skulltulas:

Successfully complete all scenarios in Legend mode on any difficulty to unlock the Hero difficulty in Legend and Free mode and a new Gold Skulltula to find in all scenarios. The new Gold Skulltulas can only be found on the Hard or Hero difficulty. It also can only be found after defeating the first Gold Skulltula, and has a stricter requirement for appearing, such as being exclusive to specific characters or weapons. Note: You do not have to play as those characters or with those weapons throughout the whole scenario -- they just need to be in your party.
Cucco's Fury in Challenge modeSuccessfully complete the 'Survival Lv.4' challenge in Ganon's Fury with an 'A' rank to unlock the Cucco's Fury special section in Challenge mode, which allows you to play Ganon's Fury challenges as a giant Cucco character.
Raising max fairies in My Fairy modeWhen you first unlock the use of fairies in the game, you are only allowed to keep five fairies at one time. However, there is a way to raise the maximum amount. Each map in Adventure mode has a 'final' stage with Ganon as the last enemy (killing him will trigger the credits). Each final stage completed will raise your maximum fairy count by one. There are nine full maps -- so it is possible to hold up to 14 fairies if all final stages are completed.
Reuse compass item card in Adventure mode
Normally all item cards in the Adventure mode maps are single use only, but this trick allows you to use the same compass card multiple times without needing to earn/buy another. When using the compass on a square that allows it, an area will sparkle as a hint, along with a message prompt stating you found a suspicious area. When the message prompt appears, do not press A to continue (otherwise the game will autosave and you will lose that item card). Instead, press the [Home] button and quit the game. When you restart the game and enter Adventure mode again, you will still have the same number of compass cards. You can use this trick to get multiple hints with the same card, making finding the hidden spots to use items much easier.
